Should I keep my garden away from my houses foundation?

Question:

Answers:
If you are talking about vegetable plants or small flowers, then you would probably be okay planting them in a border around the foundation. I did that for years when I lived in town.

If you are talking about shrubs (plants that will get more than 6 feet tall and come back year after year), I would say "keep away".

You want to keep the plant away from the foundation the same amount as the height stated for the plant. If it grows 15', keep away at least 15'. The roots can find their way into tiny cracks and damage a foundation. Annual plants, you will probably be safe if kept a minimum of 9-12" away since the roots aren't that strong anyway and they will die in the winter.

You know you have to be careful about drainage and roots. If you know what you are doing, you can make it work.
You shouldn't have a problem. My plants are about 2ft from my foundation and I have no problems.
