Can I split a peace lily?

Question:I have a lovely peace lily but it's got too big for it's pot can it be split to make it smaller or will this harm it?

Answers:
Yes, you can split a peace lilly. Just be sure to not go to any larger pot than it was in to begin with. Peace lillies like to be root bound and bloom more if they are. Splitting it will slow it down a bit so after the split each have should get monthly doses of bloom building fertilizer. Try not to damage the roots any more than neecessary. Using 2 forks going down from the top to break it apart might be the best way so you don't cut through roots. Good luck.

I wouldn't try it. You will likely end up damaging the roots more than it's worth to try. I would just get a larger pot and repot it up. I wouldn't bother though unless it is REALLY rootbound. Peace lilies can stay in the same pot for a very long time without needing repotting. How long have you had it?
You can divide them, but I have never had very good luck with this. I would probably repot into a larger pot
One of the answers above was right about them staying in the same pot for a long time. My grandma had 5 of them in smallish size pots for over 40 years. I wouldn't take the risk of moving them. Just love them and they should be fine...that's all my grandma did.
Hi, if clumps become too large or overcrowded, dig, divide and transplant them in spring or fall. with care,Lilly plants can be lifted at any time of year, even when in bloom. Fill pot about 1/3 full of potting soil, and place with roots spread and pointing downward. Cover with about one inch of soil and water thoroughly, and place out of frost areas. during the root forming period, keep the soil moderately moist. When new growth appears, add more potting soil, and gradually fill with soil as the stems elongate. Leave one inch of space between the pot and the soil, for watering.
