Mosquito problem?

Question:my sister has a small house in town on a small lot with a creek running through it. she has a terrible mosquito problem. there is no standing warter. creek is swift. no high grasses, nothing to collect stagnant water yard is clean and orderly. she wants an environmentally friendly solution. water is too swift for dragon flies. my dad and i have been trying to talk her into letting us put up a bat house in the back away from the house. she doesnt like bats. how to convince her?

Answers:
I hate mosquitos but I would love to live where she does.♥j

the mosquitos probably are not coming from the creek. it might be possible that other surrounding areas contain standing water for them to breed in and be attracted to. if u do see mosquito larvae in the creek, try adding mosquito fish into the creek. that should solve the problem of the larvae. as for the adult mosquito, u could try a bug light a distance from the house. some studies say it works while others say it doesn't. just try it for yourself. bats won't do much against tiny mosquitos. they're mainly after larger flying insects such as moths.
Somewhere there is standing water, you just need to know where to look.
Try looking in the valve boxes recessed in the ground.
Storm gutters collect water up on the roof & at the elbows where they reach the ground.
It may even be in an adjoining yard or lot but it's there. Keep looking.
I do not know the name of these bushes you can buy, but... they are sapose to keep mosquitos away from your house. Check your local greenhouse. They will tell you what I am talking about.
There's got to be standing water around somewhere, so keep searching for it. It might even be from the neighbors leaving standing water in plant saucers or something.

Now. to get rid of those mozzies...
A great trick is to take a white plate - even a plastic one, and add a few tablespoons of Lemon Joy dish detergent, and a little water. ( about 1/4 cup) Mix it well, and leave scattered around the yard or even in the house. Use several if you want to...

For some reason, mosquitos love the stuff and it kills them. You'll find them dead in the plates, and all over the ground surrounding the plates.
I've used this for years, and it works better than anything else I've ever tried.

BTW.Your sister doesn't even have to know that you've put a bathouse up, if you place it far enough away from her house. If there are bats in the neighborhood already, she won't even notice the difference.

I hope this helps...

Good luck !

Build her some purple martin houses instead of bats. They're a bird like swallows and eat about ten times more than bats.
Get a mosquito plant!!!!
I live in Manitoba, Canada mosquito capital of the universe. There is no solution to eliminate them, fogging is a temporary solution as they generally come back the next day. Dragon flies and bats do a great job but there are more mosquitoes than bats and dragon flies so they can never keep up with the volume around here. Some people have found a environmentally friendly success when they have put a teaspoon of vegetable oil in standing water in ditches and puddles as it spreads a fine film over the top where the larvae live and suffocates them. Mosquitoes don't know about property lines so will just move over from your neighbour's yard if they smell blood. I haven't seen any dragon flies yet this season but the bats are in business in my back yard at about 4:30am. You can hear them communicating to each other and see the feeding, they fly very quickly are amazing to watch. The mosquitoes are still out there though when I go out in the morning, I guess I am lucky the bats are working the mosquitoes would be worse. Deep Woods Off or Muskol are on my grocery list in the summer.
Grumpy is correct. Here in the South where the Mosquitos and Humidity and Heat are so bad, Mosquitos Flourish. WE have found out also that Martins are worth their weight in Gold. I Live on a Lake and we have the Bird houses everywhere, along with Mosquitos Zappers.. We wear Skin So Soft from Avon on our skin, which Mosquitos seem to hate. Good Luck...
If you are able to locate the standing water, even in the neighbors yard, buy some of those mosquito baits that look kinda like doughnuts and drop one into each location where there is standing water. I use them all the time in my birdbath, they work great and last for a month or so, and are harmless to the birds. They kill the larvae so new mosquitoes are not born.
