Is it possible to build a house over a concrete swimming pool?
Question:I have a double block and wish to subdivide and build a house over my 15m by 10m inground concrete swimming pool. Can I use it for the foundations?
Answers:
Only if the pool is built to the housing code used for house foundations. But that is highly unlikely. Usually pools don't have footers let alone the type of footers required to support a house.
Not for the foundation, but if you have enough room you could build a foundation independent of the pool's concrete outside the pool perimeter. It would be a large span, but doable. And you will have to modify any underground filtration, and I suppose there may be humidity issues. This is definitely the type of project you need to consult a engineer or architect on, due to span, plumbing, humidity and probably issues I'm not thinking of. Would be an interesting project for sure.
try filling in the pool before you build.it will be better than worrying about it
You probably can't "use it as the foundation" as-is, since it wasn't built to withstand that kind of structure. You might be able to make changes so that it could, but that's DEFINITELY a question for an engineer, and for your city government, as you'll have to make sure any structure you add complies with their building code.
On the other hand, I've seen people do more of a sun-room style structure over their pool, which is lighter and built to support its own weight.
