How does cantaloupe grow?
Question:I planted cantaloupe; I have alot of blooms but no fruit.
Answers:
I have the same problem, so I emailed a local master gardener, here is her response to my question. My question was basically I have many vines, a lot of flowers, but few fruits. Do I need to trim vines? This is her answer : If you remove leaves/vines there won't be enough food produced to ripen many melons. 3 maybe 4 is good to expect from a large cant plant or 1 fruit per long vine. Once a melon has set, or started enlarging, pick off all the flowers that grow beyond that fruit down the vine. There are two types of flowers - male and female. They are easy to spot once you know what to look for. Female flowers have a little green melon already showing as a bulge in the flower stem, the male flowers have a thin, straight stem and there are usually more male flowers than female. Cantaloupe are insect pollinated but you can pretend to be a bee if you want to. Use a soft little paint brush to take pollen from the male flower and brush it around the inside of the female flower - ta da!! That's it!
if you have blooms soon there will be fruit
give it a chance,,,, it doesn't happen overnight
