Im going on a vacation for two weeks and i have a lot of indoor plants.?
Question:some of these plants i can't leave outside what should i do so i don't come home to a bunch of dead plants
Answers:
take a couple of bath towels and place them in your tub/shower. place plants on top. water well. allow to drain over nite (or for several hrs) towels should still be wet, but no standing water. close shower curtain or cover with plastic...but leave a little bit of gap space. (breathing room so to speak). close the door and turn off the lights (provided there is a window)
plants should be fine.
hope this helps.
Maybe you can have a neighbor water them for you . Or if your not going to be gone to long , water them alot , and then they should be ok till you get back .
Try not to have your home to warm , that will also help from the plants drying out quicker .
phone the boy scouts, ask them if some one need to earn
$35 , they get rewarded for public service also..
happy plants happy people....
I agree with the previous post. A neighbor who will water and take the plants out every now and again is a great idea. UV light cannot get through glass so they do need to get out some time in the outside air.
If watering is the concern and no one is avialable, you may want to take some milk jugs and put micro-pinholes in them with a loose lid and set them in the pots. This way they will gradually drain and water the plants as your away.
They make larger versions of these for trees called gator bags but they are expensive. See if your local store has something in the garden dept. like that.
Set the pots in a shallow pan of water, they can get water this way.
Give a key to your neighbor and ask them to water 2x a week. better the plants should be a little dry than over watered.
If you feel you cannot do this, you can make a complicated watering system. one way is to get some cotton string. cut lenghths, and drape them into the dirt of your plant. put the other end into a bottle of water. that should keep the plant damp.. or you can take some water bottles, put small holes in the caps, turn upside down and bury in the dirt. that will let the plant get watered slowly for the next couple of weeks.
This is complicated, though, best to get a neighbor to water, and bring in your mail.
You can use a plastic bag and put it over the plant. Secure tightly around the pot so it creates a green house for each individual plant - the plants will water them selves every day as long as you dont leave air conditioning on and let it get a little hot in your home. Water well through the bottom of each plant before you leave. Mine lasted a month once with this method.
Why? Why can't you leave them outside? You didn't say what part of the country you are from, so... I don't know if it is a matter of heat that would harm your plants, or what? I'm not planning on a trip any time soon, however, I sometimes have to be hospitalized. If it is during the hot weather, I plan to group all my potted plants in a slightly shaded area, and turn on my sprinkler. It is on a stake and I can set it to spray only where my plants are assembled. I just turn on the sprinkler; set it on low spray or mist setting, and let it run until I return. I'm planning to get a sprinkler with a timer on it, eventually. This will keep my plants happy, until I return. We don't have a water shortage issue here where I live.
