How do i get rid of ants?
Question:would rather not use poison,, because of pets
Answers:
Find out where they are coming in, go outside about 10 feet, dig a hole and place 1 cup of sugar in it, they will eventually go there for their food. Keeping food off from the floor inside is a good deterrent.

You can't really without posion. I have pets though and I use Over and Out. We have zero ants in our yard and our pets have never been harmed by it. Just follow manufacture's directions.
What kind of ants are they? It makes a big difference in how you treat them. If you've got carpenter ants, you may have to get them professionally removed by an exterminator.
Most ants will never really go away until you kill off their queen. Traditional spray poison will kill a few off a few workers, but won't really get rid of the ants. Several pest companies make these little plastic dome ant traps that have poisoned ant food inside them. The workers eat the food, then take it down into their nest and feed it to the young and to the queen. As the colony dies, the ants will pile the bodies at the entrance of their colony, making it easy to find. This sounds like the best solution for you, as pets can't really get into the ant traps. An alternative is to pour hot water mixed with pureed orange peel into any outdoor ant holes.
Instead of using toxic sprays, most traditional house cleaners will stun or kill many insects, especially flying ones, but including ants. The best one I've found is Simple Green, since it's non-toxic but still works very effectively. I use a diluted 5:1 solution. Two or three squirts will stop most insects in their tracks, where they can be wiped up with a paper towel or a rag. Make sure to put them in a plastic garbage bag if you do this, in case they live through the liquid.
