Can a window airconditioner be used outside of a window?
Question:I rent a room in a house and the owner refuses to allow me to put in my window a/c unit, and also doesn't use the central air system unless it's 95+ degrees outside. I do not tolerate heat well and I'm trying to figure out what to do. I've looked at swamp coolers, but I like in Philadelphia and it's gets pretty humid here, so I doubt evaporative systems would work very well. I've seen some portable AC units but there costs hundreds of dollars. I already have a window unit - can I just put it somewhere that's just not a window and give it something to drain water on? Like near a bathtub or sink, or even a bucket?

You have to vent the back of the AC out a window. Can you put the AC up on a small table in front of the window? If you can, you can tape a plastic bag around the AC and force the vented air towards the window. There will also be some water dripping off the bottom so make sure you put it on plastic or something like that and devert the water into a pan or something.
Yes, it will work, the reason you use a window is because you need fresh air to be replenishing the air in the room. So long as you are paying rent the landlord can't stop you from putting in a unit unless you may do damage to the building, which a window unit won't. Report him to the city, they will back you up, Good luck, it pays to know your rights.
Air conditioners generate heat to make the cool air we enjoy. That heat has to be vented outside or you will be gaining nothing by running the unit.
There are air conditioning units that have a small duct that can be put out an opening (I think they come with adapters so you can open a window and the adpater covers the opening except for where the exhaust hose fits). One brand name I recall a family member had in San Francisco was Pinguino. Here is a link to Amazon.com :

air conditioners take the heat in your room and blow it outside if you have no way of that air escaping you might get a tad cooler but the ac will run continuously and never serve its purpose...you MUST have a way for the air to escape...
