How do I drive away malicious blackbirds?
Question:Killer blackbirds! They raid the birdhouses and take baby birds from their nests. They apparently watch and wait for eggs to hatch and nests to be filled with babies. I try to keep watch and run them away but they come back until they have emptied the nests. The small sparrows try to run them away but are unable to cope with these persistant killers. Help! Is there anything I can do short of getting out firearms to get rid of and keep them from returning.
Answers:
You should look into making a new bird box, if that is what you are using. It the nests are in trees, then either make a bird box, or be prepared to lose the babies. Sometimes a fake owl will do it, but not forever.
As for the bird box, it needs to be shaped in such a way that small birds can get in and out, but the bigger blackbirds cannot. Either the hole needs to be just right, or the angle and depth of the box needs to be adjusted. Note that different birds like different boxes, so see below for some ideas
not really, whatever you use to scare away the balckbirds will probably scare the other birds off too. sorry, but it's nature at work.
