Hummingbird bully chasing others away?
Question:Recently i had put up a hummingbird feeder, and i had many hummingbirds coming to it. But recently, a single hummingbird has claimed it for his own, chasing off all hummingbirds who try to drink from it. How can I stop this bully so all hummingbirds can share the feeder again?

At walmart, they sell very inexpensive feeders, buy and hang 2 more and you will have lots of hummingbirds without them fighting.
Wow, you can't really apply human ethics to animals. It's amazing how we want to engineer social justice in the animal community. Tough, Bub. Their laws are way different than ours.
put up another feeder close by but not to close because he will claim that one too....best of luck seeing all the birds
The hummingbird is a wild animal. Wild animals are by instinct and nature territorial. This particular hummingbird has staked out that feeder as its personal territory and you aren't going to convince it otherwise. Suggestion - put up a second feeder a bit of a distance from the first.
If you watch closely, I'll bet you will see this "bully" escorting his mate and young ones to the feeder, protecting them as they feed. He's not as bad as he appears. Just preserving food for him and his family. "Bachelors" don't dominate feeders. A second, 3rd, even 4th feeder spaced at least 15' apart will help.
To make feeding less costly we make our own. Boil one cup water, add 1/4 cup sugar (2 cups, add 1/2 cup sugar and so on), stir until clear; happens almost instantly. Let stand until room temp., feed. Wash the feeders periodically. Disassemble and rinse the mildew/mold attracted by sugar.
It is a natural instinct for hummingbirds to try to claim all the feeder for their own needs of survival. You could try putting another feeder in another location to offer the birds a larger supply of feeding stations. But don't be surprised if they still fight for the feeders.

Hummingbirds are territorial and will protect their nectar sources. To increase the number of hummers visiting your yard simply put up more hummingbird feeders .
