How can I get ants out of my hummingbird feeder?

Question:

This is a great questions, as I also have the same problem. I recently read to apply Vaseline to the Pole they are climbing to get to the Feeder. I must say this did help alot but, some of the larger Sugar Ants still manage to get past the Vaseline. How about Squirrels in Bird feeders, talk about headaches... Good Luck

dont put where ants ccan get to it or use splenda suger ants dont like but hummingbirds love it!!
There's a "moat" you can buy that get's hung between the hanger and the feeder. Since ants can't cross water, it keeps them out. If out don't have a bird store around, I've seen them at a few big-box stores.

Yikes! Don't ever use Splenda or NutriSweet in a hummingbird feeder. They like it okay, but it's very bad for them!
you need to take it down, wash it out,and hang it somewhere protected from ants. there are ant barrier powders and sprays that cna prevent them from coming near the feeder. once they're in they aren't gonna leave the sugar rush
To get ants out of your humming bird feeder you should tie a rope to the roof of your porch or somewhere high so the ants don't get the humming bird feeder.
What nightserf said is right, don't EVER use Splenda or any other no-calorie sweetener in a hummingbird feeder. The hummingbirds NEED the calories that sugar gives them! The sugar they get from the feeder pretty much powers them to go get the nectar from flowers that supplies all the nutrients that they need.

I got my mom a hummingbird feeder for Mother's day, and I got it from Wild Birds Unlimited. It was a UFO-shaped feeder, with an ant moat. So far, it's working well to keep the ants away. Here's the website for the store, you can't buy the feeder online from them, but there's a picture on the page of the shape of the feeder:

Hi,

Keeping insects away from even the best hummingbird feeder may be difficult. Some feeders have built-in nectar guards that prevent insects from accessing the nectar by using a flexible membrane that only the hummingbirds are able to bypass. To deter ants, you may want to purchase a feeder with a built-in “ant cup”, which can be filled with water to prevent ants from reaching the feeding ports. Ant cups can be purchased separately.

Vasoline around pole/hanger.
Use Splenda. Ants hate it but Hummingbirds luv it. Trust me
OMG, those hummingbirds could die if you put splenda in there! They need the sugar for energy! REAL sugar for REAL birds. okay? I had this problem and contacted a pest control to poison the ants in their ant hills. I had MANY! I hope someone else has a good way to prevent your problem, just don't use a fake sugar! You'l be feeding the birds nothing when they think they are getting what they need.
I have used Cotton balls ( 1or2 ) dipped in lighter fluid or charcoal lighter fluid, threaded onto the top end of the feeder hanger wire or string away from the feeder. No bugs will cross this. Use just enough fluid to dampen the cotton. You can refresh the cotton with an eye dropper and fluid when needed!
Double sided tape (tape with two sticky sides).
Ants won't walk across the sticky surface.
It's kind of like the moat principle.
You put the double sided tape around the feeder,
on whatever it is hanging from

P.S.
Somebody above mentioned they used splenda.
It has no calories and the birds will starve to death!
Don't use it.
first you gotta empty it.then you take like a hair spray top and put a tiny hole in it..then apply some veg oil in the lid run the string or wire through the tiny hole,,,the ants cant get past the veg oil
