What steps can be taken to reduce dust level indoors?

Get a good HEPA air cleaner. Read the box, and make sure it is rated for the square footage you intend it to service.
Don't smoke inside, this contributes to the dust.
get a really good air filter for your home as well as have your ducting system cleaned out also don't have your windows open. One other thought is that the sun believe it or not causes dust so just keep your window treatments open slightly during the real sunny days.
