Bonsai species for a beginner ?
Question:i had a bonsai about 2 years ago, but it died. It was a juniper squamatus (spelling is wrong i think), i had it for a year and a half but it then went all brown and died. I think it may have been due to overwatering (my step dad was watering it with the hose when i was away on holiday!! he didnt really understand the whole concept of spray bottles...) So anyway i was later told this species probably wasnt the best species to start with as a beginner. What are some easy to deal with species for a beginner, preferably for indoors would be good. Thanks

A maple or Elm are good for starter plants but if you want flowering, I would suggest a apple, cherry or pear tree. Or you can go for a flowering bush to turn into a tree, they are very hardy. Try a wegila (sp?) or lilac or forsythia. Don't try an Azalea until you can get the experiance of regular flowering trees. You can check in at the forums at BonsaiSite.com and see if they can offer any other plants.
Chances are you were keeping the juniper inside, and it MUST have a cold winter (not below 30F) to survive. If you kept it inside, you are fortunate for it have lasted that long. The previous answer from 'bluetailkinker' was good concerning the flowering trees. You might want to read the Bonsai Care page and look at the various indoor bonsai on my site:
