I have to repot a new plant, but the roots are coming thru the drain holes on the bottom of the pot...?
Question:I'm ready to repot this thing, but I noticed that the roots are growing out of the drain holes. My question is should I trim the roots? Should I try to pull them through the holes? What will happen if I do either one? I don't want to kill this plant - I just got it!

I just transplanted some flowers last week that had a lot of roots growing thru the holes. I didn't have a pair of scissors handy so I just untangled the roots & pulled them thru. the plants are thriving
Cut the pot away from the plant. Separate roots with your fingers. The new pot should be 2 times the size of the old one. Use good potting soil in a well-drained pot. You won't need to trim the roots.
What kind of plant?? Since you mentioned you just recently acquired this new baby, I will assume it came from a nursery and you will be just fine by transplanting it without any major surgery! Simply turn it upsidedown and gently let it come loose on it's own...remember don't plant it any deeper than it was...good luck
You could call a local greenhouse and ask, however, I don't think the few roots that will break off will really matter. It has a good enough root system it sounds like that it would withstand any handling during repotting. I have repotted lots of plants and I'm sure it will be fine. Just try not to chop a lot of the other roots right next to the plant off, those would be more important than the few little ones at the bottom. good luck
