How do I hold back the spring-loaded bar of a mousetrap?

Question:I have a traditional wood and metal mousetrap, but the spring-loaded bar is too powerful to be held back with the bar that connects to the trigger. What am I doing wrong?

Answers:
It isn't too strong for the bar and trigger. I suspect you are not engaging the holding bar with the trigger correctly. There is a "lip" on the trigger which may be worn or bent which is why it does not hold the bar. See if there might be a way to bend the point where the bar is held by the trigger plate so the trigger can hold the bar end better. A lot of times, it is the fault of the point on the trigger plate where it holds the bar which has become worn or damaged over time so it fails to hold properly.
