How do you make a smoke detector less sensitive?
Question:Every time the oven door is opened after preheating, the smoke detector will go off. Basically anytime the oven door is opened after the oven is turned on makes the smoke alarm go off. Some advice please.
Answers:
Clean your oven. It shouldn't smoke.
You can't have smoke detectors in the kitchen. If it's open plan, well you just have to put up with it. Dont mess with them. Smoke alarm might save your life.
Buy one of a different type by the same manufacturer. In other words if you have a products of combustion detector get a different type, call the manufacturer for a recommendation as to one that will work with the base already installed in your ceiling.
I don't know that you can, and you shouldn't. That sensitivity could save your life one day. Try cleaning your oven and see if that helps.
Smoke detectors should not be fitted in kitchen areas...even steam from cooking can set them off. The correct fitting and placing of smoke detectors is the best way to reduce sensitivity. see regulations BS199 on the placement and fitting of smoke detectors.
I know loads of people are going to say blah blah kichen fires are the most common blah blah. The purpose of a smoke detector is to give you enough advanced warning to GET OUT AND STAY OUT. That is their job, that's what they do. Fitting a smoke detector in a kitchen area is just silly.
You could try blowing a fan on your smoke alarm while you are using the oven. A small fan should work for that. For a temporary fix, I have seen the following done: put a small towel inside a bucket (like tupperwear or something) and place the whole thing over the alarm. It should stay there by itself. Also, if you are really annoyed (and I realize this might be defeating the purpose), you could take the batteries out while you are cooking.
Take cooking lessons.
ah yes the old "it's done" food beeper.
MOVE IT silly person. or clean your oven out.
how about "easy off" the oven once a week.
or "if you pull the battery you may end up dead" conversation will be had.
do you have a hood vent that goes outside? if so use it. if it has a charcoal filter, replace it.
