when the plant is half grown pince the top off just above first bud this will cause the plant to put all it's energy into the fruit instead of growth.
Did you fertilize it with a very high-nitrogen, low phosphorous and potassium feritlizer? That is one reason that a fruit plant would behave as you describe.
Could be too much shade and not enough sunlight.
