Bugs in my garden?

Question:This is the first time I've tried growing things in the yard, and I'm having some trouble. I think bugs are eating the plants. The leaves all have big holes and bite marks and I don't know what type of bug is doing it. Also, some of the plants don't appear eaten, they just don't seem to be thriving. I wonder if something is eating the roots? Is there a product I can use to protect the plants from bugs and other harmful elements? I have mostly flowering plants, such as hibiscus, four o'clocks, and jasmine.

Here are some homemade, and cheap tips that really work. My husband and I are strictly organic, so here is what we do & it does work.

*Just to be on the safe side...In case it is a slug problem, sit out a couple shallow bowls of beer. They love the beer but wind up drowning. If you don't drink just pick up a 6 pack & keep it on hand.
* Sprinkle epsom salt around your plants, but not too close to the plants base. This will definately keep them out.
*Water your plants with diluted coffe once a week. This kills off any unwanted pests & gives your plants a boost.
*Buy praying mantis eggs from a larger garden supply store. They are carnivorous, so they don't eat plants.
*Plant marigolds, chrysanthemums, chives, onions, garlic, basil, horseradish, mint, and nasturtiums to repel bugs from your garden.

That's just to name a few. Good luck & God bless.

It sounds like you have have snails and/or slugs. They primarily come out at nite and munch on the leaves. You can buy snail/slug killer which is powdery like and you sprinkle around the plants. That being said, you can also put out little dishes of beer and they will be attracted to it and hop in for a drink and drown. T

The root thing could be those littel "pill bugs".

Good luck
In addition to what the first answerer said, which was good, your soil may need amending. Whatever is specific for your area is needed. Call your local agriculture office. Also, are they getting enough water and food?
