Are 50-year-old glass canning jars dishwasher safe? How about the zinc screw-tops?

Question:

Answers:
The glass is fine, but the zinc lids are not safe. Toss them, or sell both the jar and the lid at a garage sale.

I have canned for 55 years, and would NEVER use a zinc lid.

glass is glass. I would wash the the zinc lids by hand. do they have a glass liner? Is there any embossing/ lettering on the canning jars?
I think the jars would be fine. After all glass canning jars have always been designed to be dunked into boiling water during the canning process so it stands to reason that they could withstand the high temperature of a dishwasher. I would wash the zinc lids by hand though because the harsh/abrasive dishwasher detergent could damage the finish.
