Need help with an inground vinyl pool retaining wall.?
Question:I am getting an inground pool in my back yard and need a retaining wall due to the grading of the yard. Should I raise the pool out of the ground a few feet and build a retaing wall going up to the pool or sink the pool in the ground a few feet and build a wall going down to the pool? What is better has anyone ever run in to this.
Answers:
My husband does residential and commerical grading (he also digs pools on the side) and he said to leave the pool out of the ground a little bit. For two reasons: 1.) it's going to cost you more $ when the grader comes to dig out for the pool, because they charge you more for cut and fill and plus if you have a small yard and you don't have a lot a room to store dirt then you are going to be left with a BIG pile of dirt and they aren't going to haul it off for you. AND 2.) you don't want to sink the pool down to ground level due to the way that the water will run when it rains, you will have all of the "trash" and stuff running into your pool and possibily overfilling it. He also said if you have the $ to spend and you have the space to spread the dirt out after they leave it there for you then you really can't go wrong either way it's whatever looks best for your yard. The amount of dirt can be enormous depending on the size of your pool. (particulary 27' and above) Hope this helps.
Sink the pool into the ground.
Remember that a retaining wall needs "dead men" for it to hold back the soil, especially during rain season. "Dead men" are timbers that are 90 degrees out from the wall. Yes you really do have to do a lot of digging to prevent the wall from caving in your pool.
