What is better for heating a home, a wood stove or a pellet? Is one better for the environment then the other?

I prefer a pellet stove. The burn is a lot cleaner and the ash is very minimal. You are not having to haul wood through the hose. The temperature is controlled by a thermostat. So you have a constant temp instead of a fluctuating temp with a wood stove. We burn about 3 tons of pellets a year at a cost of about $750 versus about 4 to 5 cords of dried wood at about $800 to $1000 for cut, split and delevered.
Is it going to be the only heat source? If so, go with pellet. It burns cleaner, has less ash, uses a smaller vent system and you can store the pellets indoors during the colder months.
Wood on the other hand is best kept outside (unless you want all the little critters running through the home).
