You may not believeeeeee this, BUT, peel LOTS of cucumbers and spread the peelings all around your house, under if if you can get there. They dont LIKE em and apparently dont cross them. Put them under the entrance of your doors (outside of course). I only did this once and they neverrrrrr came back! But you may have to do it a few times. Look at it this way, you can make LOTS of salad!
You can buy spray poison at your grocery store. Spray your window sills inside and outside and your door jam. In your children's room, you can put cinnamon on the window sill, ants hate cinnamon, cayenne peppers, and cucumbers!
Get or rent a ant eater !
An extermiator may be a good call to get rid of this round then you can use standard preventative measures after that.. If you find nests outside, and do not want lots of poison in the area, you cna use grits.. this is essential rough ground corn meal.. they love it.. after they eat it, they get thirsty and the water expands the grits and kills them (No they do not "pop", they just die...)
Get Ortho spray at the Home Depot, or anyplace you can purchase 5 gallons discount, with a sprayer. Some have a pump handle, these are for men (although if you want one, buy it) Ortho carries a few products, (they aren't all poisonous pesticides, some are nonpoisonous) in green plastic bottles containing a few gallons. Some bottles have neat yellow plastic sprayers attached. They sell Ortho for a few specific needs. One is ants. Walk the perimeter of your house once a week with the Ortho sprayer, and your ant problem should be gone. Keep a can of the expensive indoor bug killer for a spill incident, although Ortho will do everything for you. If you have a concrete foundation, and then shingles or siding, spray along there too. You can rake away any extra leaves, mulch, damp things which may be attracting the ants before you spray. Spray the corners of house, where one side ends, and the other begins, spray rock foundations. It doesn't take a genius to see the places you need to spray, along the ground, and again at the place the foundation meets the siding. You don't have to spray the entire two to three feet in between. Also clean your windowsills, as leafy material, dust, lint, may be stuck in the corners. How are your screens?
Get a young motivated neighbor to help if this sounds tiresome. Ortho won't make you tired or poor.
Get Ortho for indoors if they have it, and stop cleaning too hard. Use bleach.
