CAST IRON BATH Could anyone tell me what they think of the new ones?
Question:We are seriously thinking of buying one very soon, the double ended slipper style. There are some advertised on e.bay brand new and would like to know peoples opinions about them. I know they are rather heavy and are more likely to crack if not careful but they look good. Has anyone bought one from e.bay new? Many thanks

I have the original claw foot tubs that were installed when my house was built in 1921. So, no, I've never had to purchase one.
I would imagine the ones on eBay would be difficult, if not outrageously expensive to ship. If I were you, I'd check locally first and find someone who could deliver.

ok firstly why do you care what anyone else thinks of their look? it will be in your bathroom! and if you get one in fibreglass you will have to ensure you dont damge it by filling it with ater that is too hot or dropping heavy items onto it as if you dont crack the urface you can weaken it.
if it is for decoration more than everyday use (nclu. over bath shower) then go for it, if it is for everday use then maybe somehting a little more practical would be better.
I installed a "slipper tub" made from cast iron. I put it in about 5 years ago and have never regretted it. Once it is heated up with the hot water it tends to hold the heat longer than the synthetic tubs do. Mine weighed about 300 pounds. I purchased it @ a plumbing supply co. Recently a friend of mine in California said he is ordering one I believe through "Amazon" and it was going to run $1000. which included the shipping from I believe Pennsylvania.
Cast iron is a long lasting and very tough tub. You could chip the porcelin by dropping a heavy hard object into it but that same object would probably go through a fiberglass or acrylic tub. Cast iron holds the heat of the water longer also. Considering the shipping cost, you may find one locally at the same price.
Never been on E-bay so not sure what you are asking, but during my life as a builder I had to take out a fair number of cast iron baths, ten minutes damned hard work with a seven pound hammer was needed to reduce them to managable pieces so don't understand the easily cracked remark and I have an idea they are one of the reasons I'm going deaf, the noise when the hammer hits the bath sends you dizzy.
