How can I disconnect the freezer from a full-size fridge?
Question:I have an old Kelvinator fridge with a compact freezer that doesn't have it's own thermostat. I have to keep defrosting it every 3 months or I can't close the plastic door. A few days ago that door finally broke off. Now I KNOW there is a way to disconnect it as someone did it where I used to work. What I'd like to know is, do I call an electrician or appliance repair to get it done?
Answers:
The freezer cools the rest of the refrigerator. There is no way to disconnect it. In fact without the door it will get colder in the refrigerator.
The freezer in an old refrigerator (the kind where the freezer is inside the 'fridge) is the evaporator for the fresh food section. They can't be separated it's all the same system. Kelvinator brand is older than dirt, it's amazing it still works.
