What do small mom and pop retail store owners do with there overstock and returned items?
Question:I have been in small mom and pop retail stores where things just sit on the shelves for months and months. I know space is limited in retail stores so I was wondering what happens to the items that dont sell and the items that are open and returned.
Answers:
Unfortunately, the independent store owners probably have to lose money on these items, selling them below cost.
I try to support independents because we have so few of them left who haven't been swallowed-up by the supercenters who can afford returned items and loss of profit on items because of the volume they deal with.
I'm not a store owner, but this is the conclusion I've come up with, as well as why I think so many of them are going under. They can't afford to compete. I call it the "walmartization" of America, something we should all be aware of.
Some merchandise can be returned to their suppliers, like dairy, candy and tobacco. But many mom and pop's buy from Costco and the like so they cannot return items expired. They then either trash them or donate to charities with a non-responsibility waiver.
Even large retailers do this. Many food banks rely upon baked goods donated by supermarkets.
