I'm planting a garden and would like some tips.?
Question:This is the first time planting a garden, so I'm looking for some tips on what I can or should plant next to each other. I'm planting corn, sunflowers, zucchini, spaghetti squash, green and yellow onions, green beans, cucumbers, broccoli and brussel sprouts. Is there any particular order anyone can suggest to plant these?
And how often does a garden need to be watered? Every day, every other? I don't want to drown the plants, but I don't want the to dry out either.
Thanks!
Answers:
Plant smaller(height ) plants north so smaller plants don't get too much shade. As far as what is planted near each other I see no problems.
Brocolli and Sprouts, if your time of planting means a summer harvest than these will be towards the bitter side. They are sweeter when the harvest would be in cool weather. I usually wait for a light frost before picking them.
Only plant one type of corn unless you have the space to prevent coss pollination. Make sure you plant more than one row of corn(I suggest at least 4) or plant them in mounds so they pollinate properly.
A good rule of thumb is about an inch of rain per week. Unless there is drought or a real wet period, you may not need to water much if at all.
A basic gardening book would help you alot. It will give you many tips on watering, pest control, feeding, harvesting, etc. A link to my favorite is below.
I don't know of any particular order except remember that cucumbers and beans will "run" so make sure you have adequate room and plenty of stakes with twine for them to run up. Corn take a lot of room so plan accordinly. Water daily when its very warm
Without knowing your climate it is hard to answer everything. Don't plant cucumbers and squash too close together or they will cross pollinate.
SOIL IS EVERYTHING.
read up on the type of soil your plant likes. My soil is very clay like so i used like 10 bags of soil additives to get it going. As far as watering is concerned, it depends on what you plant. Read the planting instructions.
Since you are planting some tall growing plants. corn and Sunflowers, you'll want to be careful to plant those considering the sunlight. Check to see when your garden is in full sun, then plant the taller plants so they will provide shade to the lower growing plants. The seed packages tell how far apart and how tall they get. Draw a diagram, showing how the sun hits the garden in the morning, afternoon and late afternoon.
You probably need to water by watching... if it is a hot day, wait until the early evening then water. then skip a day, watch to see how dry the soil seems... since I don't know where you live... it is important to keep the soil moist and water thoroughly three or four times a week. Just don't spray the water on top of the plants, try to soak like letting the water fill the rows kinda of like irrigation. Don't water from above because you could beat the tiny plants down and stop all growth.
