Does anybody have any good ideas on how to get rid of ants in a kitchen?
Question:My wife and I bought our first house last fall and this spring we have uninvited little guests in our kitchen. The traps thus far have failed to work, any other suggestions other than calling a pest person. I think I know their source. They seem to always be crawling near the frame of one of my windows in the kitchen, which is where I often kill them.
Answers:
Natural Insect Repellents
To kill roaches/ants - Lay out bread crumbs/honey and mix with boric acid (be careful b/c this stuff is poisonous) and aspartame _ THIS IS A TRAP!
Ants: Dried cucumber slices, Soapy Water in Spray Bottle, mint tea, cayenne pepper, citrus oil, lemon juice, cinnamon and coffee grounds
Roaches/Waterbugs: Lay small bottles of boric acid on the side and put on top of cabinets or corners, catnip (they hate it), soapy water in spray bottle will kill them almost instantly, bay leaves in the cracks, dried cucumber slices, and hedgeapple
Mosquitoes: Eucalyptus oil w/ 70% cineole, and neem oil. Also mix some garlic and water and rub on your skin. At BBQ's sprinkle rosemary and sage on the charcoal to repel the mosquitoes, and give your food some flavor!
Flies: Mint, Bay leaves, and eucalyptus oil
Moths: Soak some cloth in cedar oil and hang it up, dry lemon peels in closets and other places.
Good Luck!
boric acid. put a line of it between the ant source and your kitchen. they should not cross it.
I forget the name, but you can get an inexpensive device that you plug into an outlet, (about the size of those air fresheners you plug in) & it makes some kind of vibration/noise that we don't notice, but ants HATE it. It's completely cleared out some pretty bad infestations my family had (3 different homes). 1 unit takes care of a whole room. You can get them at hardware stores. Sorry I can't remember the name, but ask the store clerk or look in the pest control sections.
If they are sugar ants, try TERRO an ant poison sold in most hardware stores. Otherwise try contacting a county extension office for information about pests in your area. Also a local hardware store may know what other people use. It never hurts to ask.
