Is a landlord in New York City required to have an exterminator come every month?
Question:We have been having this terrible mice problem and I have a 2 year old son, and we have caught 3 mice within the past month (yet took us over a month to catch all 3). We thought it was over, but then 2 more small mice appeared out of nowhere and are running around pooping all over the place. We have spent nearly $10 in mouse snap traps and glue traps, then wondered if we are supposed to be buying these without the help of an exterminator coming around. Is it illegal to have no exterminator visit our building regularly, or is he allowed to not have one? (We live in a 3 family house).
Answers:
Buy some bait houses to put outside may help a lot. It should kill them before they find a way in the house. Look for small openings and check where the plumbing comes in, like the bathroom vanity and kitchen sink, basement, gas lines etc. If you find a small opening caulk it. Maybe the landlord will deduct from the rent? If you need an exterminator they should provide one but don't count on it.
yes, if they don't report them to the board of health.
a landlord in NY is required by law to exterminate and fumigate your apt, find out about a law called tenants Rights.
