My hubby is thinking about getting a metal roof put on our home.?

Good idea, metal roofs look great.
If your shingles are not completely rotten, have it installed directly over them to add more R value (insulation).
The maintenance will be cleaning and painting; 2-4 times in your life. Use heavy duty floor paint, not metal roof paint, because the floor paint will last years longer than the roof paint.
