Open upstairs window when AC is running?
Question:I have central AC in my house, and the upstairs bedrooms are often 3-4 degrees (F) warmer than the downstairs rooms. Sometimes in the evening, it's cooler outside than it is in the upstairs bedrooms, but it's more humid outside.
What should I do? 1) Open the upstairs windows and turn the AC off; 2) Open the upstairs windows and keep the AC on; 3) Keep the windows closed and turn down the thermostat; 4) Something else?
Answers:
Keep a/c at a reasonable temp. ( no lower than 72#) Install ceiling fans upstairs and a portable fan at the top of the stairs to move air. Air movement is key to comfort!
i have the same problem... but ours is about 10-15 degrees different... we only have 2 small vents in our room... so we leave the ac on for the kids (on the main floor) and have 2 fans running in our bedroom... hope it helps a little
One thing most people don't realize is that ACs do spread air throught, but it does take time regarding circumstances(open widows, how many times the door is opened, etc.). If you want upstairs to cool down, close all windows in the house, turn the AC on, and within 48 hours the entire house will be cool. It takes time, but opening a window will not only let hot air in, it will let cool air out.

4) Something else.
Check into attic ventilation. Chances are good that the heat from the attic is the culprit. Improved ventilation and possibly more insulation will solve your problem. Insulation is fairly cheap and there are numerous ventilators available at the box stores for under $100.
