How can I get grass to grow in a yard that is mainly dirt/rocks/weeds with terribly hard soil at that?

Question:I just bought my first house and it is in a rural area that used to be farm land. However, ever since the construction it is all dirt and rocks and before I try my hand at getting grass to grow I just wanted to know what would be the best angle to go at it(of course with a limited budget)?

Answers:
I had the same thing, previous farm land. I tilled the soil, raked out most of the rocks and then added about 8in of topsoil to the entire yard. I took 3 dump trucks, but I have a green lawn now and it looks great !

Total cost of seed, fertilizer, lime, straw and of course topsoil, was about $600. My neighbor lent me the tiller and I had a Bobcat ( little bulldozer) push the soil around.

You need to remove the rocks and mix topsoil into the existing soil.
Get out that can of elbow grease, grab the wheelbarrow, and start cleaning the area you want to use. Once the debris is cleaned out, till the area, working in good dirt. Add 4 inches of top soil, sew seeds, and water every day for the first 2-3 weeks. After that, your lawn will need at least an inch of water a week. It will be better to water deep and long.
get cheapest grass seed, and lots of fertilizer and water alot!
