Stinging Nettle Plants In Syndey?
Question:im looking for the stinging nettle plant is it even in sydney?
Answers:
Hi,
We sure do have Stinging Nettles here in Sydney. I live on Sydney Northern Beaches and have them growing from time to time in my frount yard. I have been sting by them a few times. Now when I see them start to grow I pull them out of the ground and put them in the vegetation bin.
i think they are native to italy and were imported to britain during the roman empire to (believe it or not) keep the roman soldiers warm during british winters. they rolled in them to keep their skin warm.
so, we have the right environment for them (meditteranean) but i don't think they were ever imported or brought across to australia. i'm pretty sure that the when the british colonised australia, they didn't want to bring them over! if they haven't been introduced now, then i doubt you'd be able to bring them in.
They have them in New Zealand according to this information on wikpedia..I would assume the climate was right in oz too... Here in the usa(yank land)(no Bush is not my hero)...I lived in a sub tropical climate in the Florida keys, and also northen panhandle of Florida, in which our climates are similar to oz according to my friends from an oz chat room I was manager of, only our seasons are opposite.. ISo I would assume that they do exist in your area..here is some info on them..cheers!
