Anyone put in an egress window in the basement of their house or know where I can learn more about doing so?
Question:I currently have small approx 1'X2' windows and the basement is probably 90% underground. Any details you can provide such as what's involved in having someone install an egress window, cost, pro's/con's, etc are appreciated. Thanks!

I recently put one in. You will need a good cement cutter, or hire one out. If there is one thing to hire out, that is it, they are huge saws and a pro could do it in an hour.
Steps
1 dig the hole (I hired a backhoe and it was done in an hour.)
Make sure that it is to egress standards and you dig it down about 1.5-2' below the bottom of the window.
2 have the concrete guy cut the whole.
3 put in a simple frame of 2"x6" pressure treated wood. Make the frame first and smash it in.
4 install the window and seal it all up.
5 put in your window well $100-300
6 back fill with drain rock to about 3" below the window and back fill the outside of the well.
7 put on the trim outside and inside
Done
This will not only create a fire escape for your basement, but could create a whole new bedroom for your house when it comes to resale. The cost will vary depending on how much you do yourself. If you hire it all out, then it could be up to 2K, but if you do most of it youself then it would be as low as 1K.
It made the room in the basement really light, I highly recommend it for the fire escape, great feel, and reseale value of your house.

if i were going through the trouble and expense of an egress window , i would go one step further and just install a man door and cellar well with a bilco door...
