What is a fire pit normally used for? And what should it be sitting on?

Question:

Answers:
It is mostly for ambiance and gathering outdoors on a cool night. It should probably be on top of fire-proof bricks or some other type of material designed specifically for that purpose.

You could also go out and buy a nice one from Lowe's or Target that comes on a nice stand already. Those are only about $60 and at least it isn't a permanent structure so you can get rid of it in a few years after you realize you hardly ever use it. :)

Sit it on bricks or concrete. it can be used for warming up, just the thought of a fire or you can even roast marshmallows with the kids. :)
In our city, there are codes which specify that the fire pit must be 10 foot from any structure or plant material, must be set upon fireproof materials and cannot be used on declared red flag days. It cannot be used to burn brush or debris. Our codes are listed on-line at our city's website, I would check whether yours also has codes. We use ours on cool evenings to enjoy our backyard and toast marshmellows.
You can just dig a circualr hole, and line the outside with rocks...burn your garbage with it.
I am one and it is sitting on cement. It is used for keeping warm outside or cooking something good like hot dogs.
