Water heater outside?
Question:I have a water heater inside, I want it OUTSIDE to get more space in my house, children wont get hurt..what are the regulations in CA? and do I need an inspector for this?
Answers:
Well, we moved a gas water heater from inside to outside (when we lived in California a few years ago). It was moved from the front inside laundry room to the back corner of the house. They had to pour a special concrete water heater slab. Then, all the plumbing and gas connections had to be re-routed, because the washing machine was still at the front of the house. It had to be strapped for earthquakes. We purchased a doubled-insulated water heater since it was going to be outside. It had to be enclosed in a giant metal box. Although our neighbor did the same move and built a waterproof container around his that matched the house.
We wanted it to code, so we had it inspected. Technically, you're supposed to get the "Certificate of Compliance", but the plumber said many people don't bother primarily because it's an additional cost.
To do it right, you should get a licensed plumber, who's done it several times before. What you could do is get a few estimates and ask a lot of questions. It wasn't inexpensive to do (approx. $2,000), but what a relief to have that thing out of the house--it was a huge eyesore!
Check with your local plumbers, about the cost and code. Also if you want something more compact, and can still supply you with hot water, then try a tankless water heater. They cost more to install, but are more energy efficient 87-90% (government sends $300 dollar check), smaller, size of a suitcase, longer warranty, and an endless supply of hot water. Hangs on the wall, can be installed inside or outside too.
