I have an 8 year old daughter, and until a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't let her play in my yard. I tried electronic traps, dunks, sprays, etc. Nothing seemed to work.
Flies have always been serious problem in horse barns. The best thing they found to control flies is a misting system. The mist is a mixture of pyrethrin and water (pyrethrin - from an extract taken from the chrysanthemum flower - pyrethrum), that kills flying insects, but will not hurt pets and animals.
It is the same system the mosquito misting companies advertise as a "new system" specifically for killing mosquitoes. The truth is these systems have been around the horse business since the early 50s. It was originally designed to kill flies in barns and protect expensive horses, and is still used. After the West Nile virus scare surfaced, some young enterprising entrepreneurs found out the “fly killing” system used in barns also kills mosquitoes, so they put two and two together, changed the marketing, increased the price by over 400% to take advantage of the fear of West Nile, and there you have it, capitalism at work. But it is the only thing that truly works.
You can purchase the mister components on-line and do-it-yourself, or you can have a mosquito system company install it for you. It comes with a 55 gallon drum to hold the mixture. You have to refill the drum every 2 to 4 months, depending on how many misting nozzles, and how much and how often you program the system to mist. It is extremely easy to program, like a sprinkler system. A couple of times before sun-up, and a couple of times again after sundown, for 30 seconds at a time is all it takes.
I installed one on my own house for one-seventh the price I was quoted by a company specializing in that business. It took me just over 4 hours to do the entire exterior perimeter of my 3100 sq. ft. single story house. Finally, I have not seen a mosquito, fly, spider, roach, etc. since I put the system in three weeks ago. I am truly impressed, and finally relieved.
You can also buy a similar product to spray with a water hose and a bottle you connect to a garden hose, but it is not quite as good, and you will have to re-spray every couple of weeks.
Off is the best I have ever found. Not only does it come in many different sprays, but they have made special lanterns you can use in your yard that protects up to 12 feet per lantern. Calamine lotion works good if he does get bit. Good luck!
a bug zapper (the light that fries the critters) works wonders..we couldn't hardly set on our back patio with out being ate up with those little vampire type mosquitoes...the candles didn't do much of anything ..except stink.my husband got a pretty good size bug zappers...now, we have no problems...the light takes their attention off us and onto the light...which fries them..
Since your son is allergic to them.I would suggest using some kind of bug repellent on him.I have heard from many people that Avon puts out something call "Skin so Soft" that really works great..it wasn't originally created to do this..but it turn out to work wonders on keeping bugs away..
from first hand experience..the candles didn't do much of anything...the light works wonders..
They sell Mosquito repelling plants. They smell really good, look really good and you can keep them indoors or out ,as a potted house plant. I don't remember the name but this site is where I saw them. You can look for it at ,"www.InterStateNurseries.com" And with that West Nile Virus, I think more people shout be thinking about the same thing. Bye
Sweety, all those sprays can only work to a point.I live in Nigeria n trust me we do have 'em. So try this; grind camphor, mix with a little Kerosene n drop in the corners of your room/house, u're sure to see a miracle. ( I think sumtimes with all the insects, going back to our forefather's remedy is simply beautiful).
I have done a lot of research on this, because I like to go camping for up to a month out in places swarming with mosquitos. This is what I do.
Bug Zappers DONT work. Go to howstuffworks.com and they researched bug zappers and found only .22% of all the bugs zapped to be bitting bugs (mosquitos/flys). That is worthless. More bugs zapped eat mosquitos than mosquitoes actually zapped... My resource http://home.howstuffworks.com/bug-zapper...
PERMETHRIN $20- this does not repel the mosquitos, however any mosquitos that land on this will die very soon after. You can put it in a load of laundry and it will last 8 washes (if a female mosquito bites your son, her non-existant babies sure wont). Spray it on your tent when your camping. Spray it on your deck, the screen door, anwhere you see mosquitos landing. It lasts a good time when sprayed on shrubs or bushes (where mosquitoes like to hang out and lie eggs in the moisture on the leaves) like a solid month on the shurbs and several months on the screen/deck.
BTI Briquets $20- These come in a pack of 20. You take one 'pill' and put it in standing water. Like your bird bath, the ditch in the front/back yard. Ponds nearby. Anywhere theres standing water. These last a month. Read the instructions for how many 'pills' are needed for X ammount of water. If the ditch floods then stake a briquet down so it doesnt get washed away.
Your best bet would be to call a professional bug killer. Just ask to buy this stuff, politely decline his services. Dont know if walmart has it.
Deet just repels mosquitos because it interferes with its senses. Basically it blinds it. So it flys away and recovers. By using stuff to kill the mosquitoes that come after you, you can wipe out the whole cycle. (they have less than 100 yard active range). So if they cant re-populate in that range... They cant bite you..
The Permethrin if only put on your clothes will not kill anything other than the bugs that land on it. Except for the stuff in the water in your washing machine that goes wherever it goes... But thats someone elses yard right. The BTI only kills mosquito larve, because they eat the BTI. Use these 2 methods to keep the mosquito population down while using deet to keep them off of you. Depending on how sensitive your sons skin is, just use pure Tea Tree Oil on his exposed skin and spray his clothes with deet before you put them on... I had this combo on, and my buddy got over 20 bites and I didnt have any. Tea Tree Oil is an awesome antiseptic, while even beneficial for us in such consentration it is still toxic to most every bug. Even use it on bug bites. Oh and soak a cotton ball with it and put it over a tick and bandage it down. 30 minutes later youll find the tick with his head pulled out and dead.
There are items out there for luring mosquitoes into the bug zapper, like mating fragrances. There are other things that put off the signal mosquitos like so they are drawn into it (co2, a little bit of heat, moisture spray)... Whatever the device, if its attracting mosquitos its likely to just bring more into your yard than it is acutally killing. I read a lot of reviews and found that the devices (costing around 200 dollars base-not including refils) were killing about 1 mosquito per dollar of the devices base cost before they broke. I guess they are worth a try depending on how desperate you are.
If you just use those 2 methods of killing mosquitoes, along with tea tree oil on your exposed skin (even your face-not the eyes, its much safer than deet), and put 100% deet on your clothes BEFORE you put the clothes on (no skin contact) your not going to get bothered by mosquitoes at all. 30% deet lasts an hour, so dont waste your time. 100% deet is good for atleast 6-8.
Good luck, I despise mosquitos.
question, is the cure worse than the disease...
if you want to go all out...
bug fog the yard, bushes, woods this will get them moving out of your area or kill them.
eliminate all standing water in the area!!!
change bird baths to fountains pumped recirculated water kills eggs, embrios, juvaniles
treat all standing water with chemical or environmental deterrants. mineral oil slicks work in stagnant ponds. some species of fish eat mosquitoes. there are also bacterial cakes that cities use in sewers before holiday events...
buy and use a diversionary device like a propane mosquito attractor/killer.
put the kid on a second floor patio deck. mosquitoes are opportunistic mammal hunters, 99% of their prey is under a imaginary 10 foot ceiling from the ground level.
slather the kid in bug repellent if they are not allergic.
stop using fruty fragrant soaps and shampoos that attract bugs. do what cubans, mexicans, south americans, affricans do... cinamon, camphor, cedar, citronella, plain or camping soaps. or, just trial and error. find a soap that the kid likes and the bugs don't
use moth balls in clothing storage to hold tint the clothing for additional protection, or find soaps for that purpose at camping stores.
net the bedroom and bed.
keep positive air pressure in the childs room at all times ( like boy in the bubble movie) small flying insects cant fly against the wind easily. this is also used to keep flies out of restaraunts...
got more ideas, but little space to write
good luck
