I need to move a 6 foot cactus 1300 miles. Moving company wont touch. Any suggestions on packing?
Question:Probably will have to lay it down in a car
Answers:
Bubble wrap,and plenty of it.
Gently wrap it in a tarp then build a wood frame around it.
take some clippings and start over so they will adapt to where you are moving to. Easy plants to do that with.
Get a 6.5' tall cardboard box from your local whitegoods store, fill it with the loose foam packaging stuff they use. If you surround it completely, and tightly packed, it will be cosseted and will not move much or break. Even the little spiny things will be ok, except you will have a hell of a time getting them off ! Maybe use popcorn to pack instead, then hopefully the birds will eat them off .
you didn't say what kind of cactus your transporting. I assume it is columnar.
1 - use crumpled newspaper to fill the void between the soil and the top of the pot (packed tightly). tape across the pot to hold the newspaper in place ( don't skimp).
2 - tape numerous(at least 10) layers of newspaper around the stem.
3. if transporting in a 'mini van' etc.and laying on it's side, lay something 'soft' to fill the void between the floor and the stem.
4. DO NOT WATER before packing the cactus. it will survive a trip of 7-10 days.
5. when you get to your new abode, undo the packing and allow the cactus time to get accustomed to it's new environment ( just like you). you can water (if you must) after a week.
