What are some tips to keep your home or apartment cool in the summer?
Question:
Answers:
Always close doors and windows when the temperature outside is hotter than the temperature within, usually during the day. The opposite is true of nights or cool times - then you should open all the windows / screen doors and let the fresh air in. Having some fans running helps circulate air so no area gets too hot or too cold. If all else fails, and you have a basement, chill there - it's usually the coolest place in the house.
Keep windows covered with a non transparent material.
Do not open the windows, especially in old houses. They
will hold the cooler air from the previous night for much of
the day. Close any fireplace vents. Do any oven cooking
the night before, or really early in the morning.
Closing curtains or draperies on sides of the apartment or home to keep the sun from coming in during the day will help immensely. Opening windows at night when it's cool and shutting all windows and doors during the day will keep your house cooler.
The best thing is to leave the thermo set at one setting. If you turn it off and leave and come home and it's hot it will cost more to cool it back down then just leaving it set at one temp. I live in Ca where it gets hot came home one day and it was hot in there and the air ran for ever to cool it down and since then I leave it set and always have a lower bill then my neighbors that turn it up and down.
Keep hot air out by not opening windows, and letting hot air inside. Have/run ceiling fans. Keep sun out by closing curtains as much as possible.
