What are the pro's and con's to fiberglass versus concrete or liner inground pools?
Question:
Answers:
Vinyl lined pools have a life of about a decade. They tend to shrink a bit as time goes on so you may have them pulling from the corners.
Concrete/gunite/plaster/tile will wear and stain over time. Maintaining proper calcium hardness, pH, and alkalinity is essential in these types of pools to keep the surface smooth. It will roughen over time even under ideal conditions because water will eat away at the surface of the material. The only thing you can do is to slow this down, it can't be stopped completely.
A fiberglass pool will last virtually forever if you maintain proper pH and alkalinity. Hardness doesn't matter for a fiberglass pool but proper pH and alkalinity do.
Both vinyl lined and plaster/concrete pools can be custom shaped to any shape you want. A fiberglass pool will generally not be able to be shaped unless it's blown in on site and then sculpted.
Vinyl lined pools are less expensive than either other type, fiberglass is next, concrete/plaster/gunite are the most expensive... in general.
