What causes rust to happen in the dishwasher?

Question:The material on the dishwasher racks is thinning in a few places (it is only one year old) and exposing rust. The extended warranty I have on the dishwasher says that rust is excluded because it is the cause of the environment I have put it in. I just wanted to know what I am doing to cause this Thanks! :D

you may have extremeley hard water. i just moved into my apartment with brand new appliances, and my dishwasher rustd as well. it also rusted my silverwear, and even parts of my sink!! its hard to believe that water could do such a thing, but thats the only thing ive been told is that i must just have really hard water or its just the area i live in

hi
the inner body of dish washer is made-up of iron and because of contact of liquid, it gets rusted. to make it corrected, u can paint it from inside. hope this would help u.
Bad water is the cause. You should have someone come out and test it to see what can be done. The test is usually free, but the equipment can cost a small fortune.
