to kill them effectively, you will have to go not so cheap. i had this dilemma this spring. i ended up buying a weed and feed mixture and spreading it over my lawn. it was about $40/bag but it covered 1500 sq ft. thereabouts.
The only way to rid weeds from the lawn is to use selective weed killer. This will kill the weeds but leave the grass untouched. Find it at any good gardening outlet.
You could buy a weed and feed solution - but - I keep a rabbit and can't use this stuff on the lawn, so what I do, is heap a teaspoon of salt in the middle of the weed. If it looks like it will rain, just leave it, if not, sprinkle a bit of water on the salt. It seeps down to the root and kills that as well. Works for me.
