How long does chlorine need to set in a pool to be able to swim in it?
Question:We are putting in a 26,750 gallon inground-pool in our backyard.
Will we have to wait after it finishes filling with water and we add the chlorine??
If so, how long?
Answers:
When it's finish filling, go ahead and jump in, it's just like bath water. I shock my pool while the kids are in it. I put a bag of shock in the skimmer, then I keep a tablet of chlorine in the skimmer all the time.
You can swim in it immediately. Chlorine just makes sure that your pool doesn't have bacteria and other stuff living in it over time.
You need a pool-water test kit (less than $10). Follow the directions (very, very easy) to test for free chlorine in the water. The test will have a range it results need to fall into for it to be considered 'safe' to swim.
You will also be testing the pH regularly, so might as well do that right off the bat too...
It depends on the type of chlorine and the brand. If its a stick or pellet kind immediately. If it a gradual form or shock-it you need to wait an hour. Starting the pool you're likely 'shocking' it (1 lb bags you toss in the water) so you'll need to wait an hour.
It wont hurt the pool if you fill it and then wait to put the chlorine in the evening after you've swam. Just don't let is sit more than 1 day with water and no chlorine. Until then the water will have enough chlorine to protect itself.
make sure that when your pool builder puts the water into the pool that he uses a filter on the end of the hose or hoses! there is a filter called a bobby sock filter that you can use for this! if not your new plaster can be discolored.do not let him put socks or rags over the end of the garden hose. and yes you can swim right away with this chemical ! as soon as it is filled use sodium dichlor as your sanitizer. 1 lb per 10,000 gallons of water. once a week.do not stop the water until it is half way up your skimmer !
