Is it true that bleach makes flowers in a vase last longer?
Question:I heard it on CSI
What else can I put in the water to make them last longer?
Answers:
A crushed up asprin. Not paracetamol or iboprufen.
A teaspoon of bleach to about 500ml of water just stops the growth of bacteria and the water going grungy.
I would think that bleach would kill them. Most of cut flowers come with a special food pack. I wish they all lasted longer, but unfortunately, they don't.
bleach will kill them, put a half of an aspirin in there. they will last longer
no too much bleach will actually kill them. some sugar and/or crushed aspirin will help cut flowers to last longer.
Yes, I would think bleach would kill them too. You can put a baby aspirin (or 1/4 - 1/2 of a regular aspirin, depending on the size of arrangement) or a little sugar in the water helps too.
You can add a few drops of Panchakavyiam which is a traditional natural micro nutrients which keeps the flowers longer in the vase.

I use an aspirin in the water and if you are lucky enough to have them for longer than a week, change the water once a week but when you do that, cut about a quarter of an inch off the stem at an angle and then add a new aspirin. I have really good luck doing this and even had some daisy for three weeks!
I did a brief keyword search on msn.com (bleach flowers longer) and some of the websites say this is true and others say it is false. However, I'm not seeing anything from a truely reliable souce. Those that say to use it, say to use only a 1/4 of a teaspoon per vase full of water. After a few days change the water completey and add 1/4 teaspoon of bleach to that.
Good luck!
