Is there a way to kill weeds without killing the flowers?
Question:We recently bought a new home, and whoever owned the house before us did not take very good care of the flower bed on the side of the house. Some of the flowers are very pretty, but it is so overgrown with weeds. Is there a way to kill the weeds without hurting the flowers? I've tried getting down and pulling them out, but I wasn't sure if there was a easier way.
Answers:
Typically, no. You have to do it the old fashioned way, unfortunately.
Just pull it out the ground.
getting down and pulling hem out is the best way...
oherwise just clean up the whole garden... and plant the saplings again...
<i think just pulling will be better>
There isn't. The only other thing that may help is using some strips of black landscaping plastic between the flowers. Then use some mulch to hold it down. That will eliminate the weeds from coming back. Good luck.
Avoid pesticides at all cost (they kill everything) and they are not safe for humans. I had the same problem and I dug the weeds into the ground and covered the area with a light proof garden cloth. Weighted with stones it is attractive and keeps the weeds from growing. Some people use newspaper; it is more work intensive but cheaper. Good Luck
Yes, you where on the role by pulling them out but try getting a weed killer spray. This will help alot because this is only affecting the weed a not your flowers.
Pull all the weeds, making sure to get the root system as well (best done when soil is wet). Then cover with newspaper (black & white only). This works as a natural weed barrier, and is biodegradeable. Cover with 4-6 inches of good top soil, mixed with perlite. Cover with 3-4 inches of mulch to help retain moisture. Feed every 2 weeks with Miracle Grow and epsoms salts, mixing 1 tablespoon of each to 1 gallon of water. Deadhead your flowers regularly to encourage new blooms.
Yes, You can find weed killer at your hardware or garden store near by which will kill the weeds, but not the plants. Preen I believe is how it is spelled kills weeds. However if you have weeds before you put the Preen down then you must pull those. Preen kill the ones which begin to grow. So you will have to pull the ones already there, but can avoid it in the future with Preen.
Yes there is. You can either use a spray like round up or any other weed and grass killer as long as it's not windy outside and you don't allow the spray to touch the leaves of your flowers. Another way is granules that you can throw in your flower beds that kill weeds but not your flowers however, this will not keep the grass out of your flower beds but it will the weeds.
Hello,
I have two things I use to kill weeds:
1. A "Weed Hound" from Home Depot. It is inexpensive and gives you immediate gratification without too much effort.
2. I put "RoundUp" herbicide / vegetation killer in a bucket. I then take a foam paint brush and attach it to a three foot stick with duck tape. Just paint the vegetation you want to kill. If you accidentally get some on your flowers, take scissors or pruning shears to cut the affected area off. The original RoundUp takes two weeks to totally kill the plant. The newer residential RoundUp is supposed to work considerably faster. I do not know how fast. I use the slow stuff since I bought a five gallon container of it several years ago. Note: Try not to walk on the areas you treat. I have returned in two weeks to find my footprints across the yard. That is a little embarrassing.
I hope you find this information of value.
Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!
OK, here's the lazy man's way (MY way). Instead of trying to actually pull the weeds, which may be very deeply rooted, CUT them off at the base with grass shears or whatever. Much easier than pulling them. Now, once they are cut back:
Method #1. Spray poison on them -something like "Triple strike." Do this ONLY if you can spray straight into the top of the weed stem and NOT contact the flowers. The sprayer nozzle is very adjustable, but you want to get that nozzle as close to the weed as you can.
Method #2. Cover what's left of the weed stem with thick mulch, to reduce exposure to light. Yes, the weeds will break through again (they're like that) but eventually they will die off because they, like all plants, need light. When they DO break through, clip them back again and add some more mulch.
Use 1 and 2 in combination as appropriate and in ANY case put down the mulch, which will give you "immediate gratification."
Enjoy!
