I turn the iron on to a medium heat, and scrub it with a wet washcloth. Just be careful not to let the washcloth too dry. I keep wetting it with cold water. Hope that helps you!!
Dry a damp paper towel with lots of cloth towel in between while iron is hot. Try steel wool when the iron is cool.

there is 'gunk' remover that you can buy too. Just make sure once you have cleaned the iron, test it on an old white cloth to make sure no residue remains and that you have cleaned out all the holes the steam comes out of. In the future, use distilled water. Ever since I have switched to distilled water, I no longer get the buildup of gunk.
