What would make a crepe myrtle suddenly die?

Question:I have crepe myrtle trees that were healthy looking one week and totally dead the very next week. would could cause such a rapid change and death of these magnificent trees?

Answers:
The good news is that they might not actually be dead. We planted a beautiful one when we listed our house for sale, and then cringed when it "died". Visited the place a year later, and it was THRIVING.

Apparently, in marginal climates (zones 5 & 6), crepe myrtles often die back in their initial planting season before they grow out...go figure. Maybe a local greenhouse/arborist could tell you if yours are still living underneath that dead-looking exterior. Hope they survive, the trees are gorgeous!
