What type of leather is this?
Question:I have bought a new leather sofa in white today (metis sofa from csl - http://www.csl-sofas.co.uk/leather-sofas... It is very smooth and soft to touch, it is described as a grade 12 leather in snow white with no finish on it. It looks quite matt.
What should I use to protect it (if anything)
Will stains come out of it, what do you suggest to use.
Answers:
You should use a good leather protector immediately. With it being a white sofa it will need regular cleaning and protection to keep it looking good.
If it is white it will have a finish on it and it is this that needs protecting. Grade 12 is just a price point and does not say anything about the leather itself and unfortunatley CSL will not be able to tell you anything about it or how to look after it.
The general rule would be to protect it as soon as you buy it. Wipe down on a regular basis with a damp cloth or use a maintenance product like Lazy Leather, this will clean and protect. Wipe up any spills straight away to prevent them soaking into the leather (the leather protector will help this too). DONOT use conditioners, baby wipes or any silicone sprays on it otherwise you will damage the finish.
It sounds to me like Kid Leather which means it is made from young goat skin. It's terribly soft but hard wearing and is often used to make young childrens shoes. I should get it professionally scotchguarded, ask at a dry cleaners they usually send someone round to do it.
It's probably best to ask the supplier. They should know their product well enough be able to advise on any protective finish that you might want to use.
They might even be able to tell you which type of animal the leather came from.
