MUMS Flowers?
Question:When MUMS die do you prune them back or just cut off the dead flowers?
Answers:
Chrysanthemums are dead headed until they die of old age. There is a type called Marguerites which can be maintained in a warm green house in the winter, with cutting being taken in the Spring. If you have older variety of Christmas Mums their cutting need to be taken in Jan or Feb before the flower bud develope so they can be induced into flowering for christmas but this takes time and effort. Much potting and repotting interdispersed with feeding and long hot summer days outside in the shade which will give loverly results.
prune them back. they may very well sprout up again late summer, early fall. they did for me, went dormant in the winter of course, and are back for a third time.
Deadhead during the growing season. They're perennial so they'll come back next year. When they come back next spring, you'll want to prune to encourage extra growth.
Cut them dowm low. That gives them time to grow before the next bloom. Cut them, Feed them, and when ready to bloom again, they wont be on spindley branches that can't hold them. You'll also get bigger flowers.Bye
