Salt Sanitizer for Pools?
Question:Does anyone know of any other sanitizing agents that I can use as an alternative to adding chlorine w/o having to spend thousands on a salt chlorine generator.
Answers:
I have to ask, why don't you want to use chlorine? The chlorine concentration in a maintained pool remains 50-200% below the levels of chlorine you can find in many municipal water sources used for drinking, washing, bathing, etc. Proper chlorine levels in pool water have no taste, no smell, are too low to bleach out colors or damage clothing, and are not harmful to the mucus membranes, skin, or hair on bathers. NOTE I said PROPER and a vast majority of pools out there are running improper levels of chlorine (free, total, combined).
Ionizers work, sort of, but do not sanitize the water in any way. Ozone generators will kill algae but do nothing to remove organic compounds common in pools (they oxidize them but leave the oxidized compounds in the water without gassing them off). The same thing applies with UV filters, the organics remain.
Unfortunately there is only one way to maintain sanitized water and that is with chlorine or bromine. Bromine has been used with great results in some cases but it can cause more problems than chlorine itself.
An ozonator (ozone generater) works great! You can purchase a unit for your pool starting at about $600 and up- depending on the size of your pool. Also a pool ionizer will reduce the amount of chlorine you use- and save your hair and swim suits too! around $200. Then there is Ultra violet (UV) treatment, this is non chemical and prices range from $200-$500 depending on your pool size. Chorine sucks- there are a good amount of non toxic alternatives out there,
first : you should not even consider a salt generator anyway unless you have a few more thosand dollars to spend replacing the corroded heater parts, plaster, rockwork etc. Do not believe the B.S. anyone trys to feed you about salt pools. They are corrosive and present an electrical shock problem as well. You have been warned. As far as chlorine it is the ONLY safe and effective sanitizer that should be used.If you are having odor,or other similar problems commonly associated with chlorine use you are not shocking your pool. Buy only non-chlorine shock and use it according to the label instructions. You can get it at any Leslie's or other pool supply. It WILL solve your problems.
