How to Get Rid of Groundhogs
Should apply to Gophers. It works.

Steps
Make sure the day is sunny so the animals can come out of their hole/burrows.
Take about two and a half cups of Sudsy Ammonia. Sudsy Ammonia is also called Cloudy Ammonia.
If Sudsy Ammonia is not available, you can make your own for this task. ( See next step ).
Take a glass container. Add about quarter cup of water. Add about 2 table spoons of detergent (or soap) to the water and stir. Take two cups of regular Ammonia available in pharmacies etc., and add this to the solution of detergent/soap. This is now a very very close substitute for Sudsy Ammonia.
Pour the mixture in the hole/burrow where the animal lives. Make sure you pour it so that much of it can flow deep into the hole.
Leave the area alone. Sometimes the animals will start leaving very shortly. If there are young ones present, then the process takes longer as the animal will first find a new home and then take the young ones along.
Observe ocassionally if the home has been abandoned.
If on the next day, you still see some activity, repeat the process.
Continue the process as long as you see activity but do give a minimum of a few hours or a maybe a day's gap between repeat pourings.

Tips
Do not try in winter as the animals cannot effectively find a new place to go to.

Warnings
Ammonia is to be handled carefully. Read the instructions on the container.

well to tell you the truth you probably can't. they like where they've made their homes. i work on a farm and they are a MAJOR nuissance so yes we do need to kill them. buutttt . you could try getting a "have a heart trap" which is what we use... they don't hurt the animal... just bait it with some food cheese works sometimes... slightly bad veggies... corn... and then just release it somewhere far away... i hope it works for you. good luck.
Rent or buy a live trap cage and put some leafy food inside like cabbage or lettuce.
Cover the cage with something so it doesn't scare the ground hog.
Be patience, sometimes they won't go into the cage at first.
This works for skunks: place a bowl of ammonia in a one car garage, place more for larger ones, on a warm day and leave the door cracked a little bit enough to let the groundhog/skunk out and that should do it.

The reason it works on skunks is they do not like the smell of ammonia.
